1. The country itself - wonderful landscapes, fantastic coastlines and nice climate.
2. Kindness and hospitality towards strangers. A lot of quiet gentle courtesy.
3. Astonishing history that the Portuguese rightly are very sensitive about.
4. Low crime (particularly casual crime) compared to neighbouring Spain for example.
5. EU membership. Has benefited Portugal greatly, but opportunities have been wasted.

1. A young fractious democracy with not enough principle and too many compromises.
2. Too much bureaucracy from an overbearing public sector.
3. Corruption in the widest sense of the word.
4. Poor and inconsistent standards in policing - particularly in the GNR.
5. Inadequate investment in people and physical infrastructure for the long-term.
